The challenge of Cokeville

This little poem by Mattie J.T. Stepanek in his poetry book "Journey through Heartsongs" is a great reminder about life.

I love reading the poem Grounded Lesson and applying its wisdom to living in Cokeville, Wyoming. Sometimes it reminds me of me, sometimes it talks of my friends and sometimes it just helps me get through the shoveling of snow.

Grounded Lesson

Life is a treasure.
People should enjoy it,
Even if digging
To it, or
Through it,
Is a challenge.

Ski School Update

I have just returned from Pine Creek where Denise Kallstrom and I (Shelly Gailey) spoke with Paul directly. He did state that their policy is to charge ski school students who stay after ski school. However, when I showed him the paper work that was sent home this year that stated the kids would be allowed to stay free of charge, he agreed to honor that.
So, for the remainder of this ski school season, ski school students (from Cokeville only) will be allowed to stay without being charged. But be aware that this will change for next year.
So now is the time to decide if you want to purchase a season pass for next year. They go on sale on March 1st and will be good for this March (weather permitting) as well as next season. Also, if you buy next year's pass by June it is at a discounted rate. Check with Pine Creek to get exact prices. Remember that we need to support our local ski lift, or it will no longer be there for us to enjoy. The PTO also wants to thank all the parents who have volunteered their time to help make ski school and swim school programs a success. Please get in touch with me if you have any questions or concerns about this program.

After Ski School - Pay to Ski for Pine Creek Ski Resort in Cokeville

There has been some confusion, that started yesterday (Thursday) with an announcement made at the elementary school that said something like: Children have been staying after Ski School on Friday and have not been paying the fee to ski half a day. Please do not stay after ski school if you don't have money to pay the fee.

Many children went home with the verbal message. Some were upset. Many parents were upset at the idea that the family was perhaps being labeled as dishonest because they had not paid for their children to stay and ski at Pine Creek when ski school ended.

The papers sent home by the PTO indicated there would not be a charge for children to stay the remainder of a ski school day.

According to a telephone message by Shelly Gailey of the PTO, both the announcement at school Friday and the written note sent home at the beginning of ski school have changed.

TODAY January 23 2009 ONLY, one more time, children may stay and ski free at Pine Creek. However, that will be the last day of free-ski half days.

Please contact Pine Creek Ski Area or a member of the PTO to verify this information

I want to do the Cokeville Easter Egg Hunt!

The following email was sent from Nellie Richins, former Cokeville resident:

Hello, Cokeville:This is a letter from the lady that brought you memorable
Easter Egg Hunts in 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007. In 2008, nobody
asked me, or they couldn't find me, or someone mistakenly thought I was
interested in Easter in Cokeville anymore. Anyway, I'm back, I'm eager,
willing, and ready to bring you another "eggs"citing Easter Egg Hunt. Did
you know there are less than 90 days before Easter? If the Cokeville
community would like me to bring them an "eggs"hilarating Easter Egg Hunt,
I need to hear from you. Remember, Saturday, April 11 is only a bunny hop
away! Thanks, Nellie Richins

Large Archiving Project - Volunteers Needed!

Volunteers are needed for a large archiving job.

The Cokeville Cemetery is being digitized in several ways by an area historian. He has requested help in gathering information and he is willing to add the information to a website he will make for the Cokeville Historical Society. This is an amazing opportunity to have some Cokeville history preserved and made accessible to the public.

Already completed is that the headstones have all been photographed and are being prepared for a website.

Now funeral programs and obituaries are being collected for all who are buried in the cemetery and also for anyone who has a connection to Cokeville: i.e. born here, lived here, taught here etc. but not buried here.

This is a large project and of course, will be on-going. However, the archiving part can be completed in a decent amount of time...with volunteers.

We need to find obituaries and funeral programs. Do you have some?

Would you be willing to help scan?
(You can get the easy necessary training to do this. Also, if you do not have access to a scanner, a place can be provided for you if you can volunteer time) Please email karla_toomer@yahoo.com

Karla Toomer has previously talked to several people about this project. If you are still interested, or you haven't been talked to but this sounds like something you can spend a few hours a week on, please email to karla_toomer@yahoo.com
