Back to School Night - Cokeville jr./sr. High School

Tuesday August 26 was back to school night for kids at the Cokeville jr./sr. high school.

Back to School Night - Cokeville Elementary School

Monday August 25 was back to school night at the Cokeville Elementary School! Mr. Harris gave a great welcome and encouraged everyone to check out the school's website, www.cokeville.com, on a regular basis.

We were served yummy sloppy joes and then had a chance to meet with teachers and staff.

Barbara Sorensen turned 50!

She doesn't look it, but she turned 50 this week! Her daughter and daughter-in-law gave her a surprise party with family and close friends. Happy Birthday to the Town's Court Clerk! Thanks for all you do for our town!

Kudos to the Cokeville Chamber!

Kudos to the Cokeville Chamber of Commerce. Stewart Petersen and Carol Reed have been members of the Chamber of Commerce since its inception two decades ago. Quite often, they were two of the less than five members. In her time here, Faye Taylor was also quite active and supportive of the Chamber of Commerce.

The most recent Chamber of Commerce officers are: Stewart Petersen, President; Paul Phillips, Vice President; Clara Dayton, Treasurer; Carol Reed, Secretary.

It isn't fast or easy getting things done when you are few in number so the kudos goes to this group for:
1) Carefully safeguarding funds the past three years to be used as donated - towards a "Welcome" Sign for Cokeville. (Money from Lincoln County Recreation Board to Town of Cokeville for signage, given to Chamber of Commerce. Amount $1,000 ?)

2) Searching for a grant to increase funding towards project. Finally received one this year, 2008. Project to be completed by year's end

3) Diligently searching for donations to enable the project's completion by deadline.

4) Approaching the Town Council to take some ownership in the "Welcome" sign by donating towards costs. Amount approved in 2008 by council, "$1500.

5) Arranging for an artist to carve a 7000 pound rock. Cokeville Artist Gary Taylor declined to sand blast the rock due to health reasons. Border Artist Cal Price (aka Caprice) agreed to take on the huge task. Age? 82.

6) Arranging WYDOT approval for project

7) Getting with Pacific Power about electrical needs

8) Stewart Petersen for donating the space to put the welcome sign

9) Mr. Maddock for getting well casing donated

10) The rock place for donating the rock

11) Stewart Petersen for arranging donation of rock, well casing, transportation of rock

Thank you to those of you who have a vision and move forward with it. It may take time to put everything in place, especially while keeping the rest of your commitments, but you did it!!

The sign will look beautiful south of town. Some day, perhaps, funding will become available for one north of town as well.

THE CHAMBER IS STILL IN NEED OF HELP FOR PLACEMENT OF THE ROCK AND MORE. Please help if you can. They need a large boom truck to lift rock into place.

Wyoming State Library Visit

Wyoming Newspaper Project Presentation and Training

The Wyoming State Librarian, Lesley Boughton, and the Wyoming State Librarian Digital Information Specialist, Erin Kinney, were in town on Thursday and Friday to present the "Wyoming Newspaper Project" to our town. The event was co-hosted by the Cokeville Miracle Foundation and the Cokeville Historical Society.

We had a huge turnout at the presentation which was held during the "Cokeville Historical Society" Meeting on August 14th at 1pm at the Town Hall. Thanks everyone for coming to our meeting! :)

We had four trainings over the two days. Thanks to the Cokeville High School for making the computer lab available for us to use. Thanks to Principal Keith Harris, Computer Tech Brian Toomer and to Darren Moody for the awesome signs so no one got lost!! (Hopefully Lesley and Erin had a good time visiting the LDS Church and the Minerva Teichert Art work there as well as meeting local artists at the Cottonwood Ranch on Thursday evening! ) We enjoyed the ladies and appreciate the new friendships we made with you!

The WSL was able to train what they refer to as "The Original 48". (I guess I make 49, but the original 48 sounds cooler).

We hope that more funding becomes available so that others who wish to help with this project, and work part-time from home, will be able to get on board!

Guess what Cokeville, THIS WAS FOR REAL!!!!

The Art Show and Fireside at the LDS Church

The Art Show, Sale and Dinner at Pine Creek

August 15 & 16 was the 4th Annual Minerva Teichert Invitational Art Sale and Show in Cokeville, Wyoming. Thank you to Charles Dayton for putting this wonderful show together. Thank you to Charlotte Freeman and the other ladies for their decorating. Thank you to the Pope Family for the excellent chuck wagon dinner. Thanks to all who came and enjoyed the two day event.

THANK YOU ARTISTS!! (I will post full names later...)

We had several special guests in town for the event:
Peter Fisher from Sunset Magazine - it was a pleasure to have you!
Erin Kinney - Wyoming State Library Digital Informational Specialist
Lesley Boughton - Wyoming State Librarian
Dave and Heidi Decker - Our most "returning" guests from out of town for the art show!!

In the future of wide open Wyoming?

I have no idea what this says but the picture is very cool...could this be in the future of wide open Wyoming? The link is: http://argentinaautoblog.blogspot.com/2008/08/un-lotus-para-la-antrtida.html

Wyoming State Library - Wyoming Newspaper Project

There is now a group blogspot for Cokeville in addition to the state wiki. It recaps the trainings, it is interactive. It will have all the necessary links to state sites. You received an invitation to join based on the email you left after your trainings. If you don't have an email invitation to join, your email address didn't work or was incorrect (we had several that were bounce back). You don't have to join the blogspot, it's just a way to help each other answer questions...

WGFD Cut-Throat Slam Program

Wyoming Game and Fish Department (WGFD) has a great fishing program, the cut-throat slam, for catching four native cutthroat Wyoming fish, and taking a picture to send in. My family started on their slam award this summer. Today, 8/14/08, there was a great article by B. Prettyman in the Salt Lake Tribune from Cokeville, Wyoming (!) about the cut-throat slam! You can read it by clicking here. The link will expire after some time, sorry.

If you would like information on how you can earn the cut-throat slam certificate, visit the Wyoming Game and Fish website by clicking here . Let cokeville.blogspot.com know when you get your certificate and we'll post your picture! Little hint I once heard, Cokeville is the only place in the state where 3 of the 4 can be caught!

Minerva Teichert Invitational Art Show

The word "Invitational" may be throwing off some people. The invitational refers to the artists, not to the people that can attend! This great show, now in it's 4th year, starts tomorrow with Julie Rogers speaking at the LDS church at 10am about Minerva Teichert. The Show opens at Pine Creek at 1 with artists and their works on display. There is a dutch oven dinner, very reasonably priced, at 6pm. Original Art, and some prints, are for sale as well. At 8pm is a free date night with a movie, National Treasure 2, also at Pine Creek - but you'll want to bring coats and blankets - it will be outside and IT WILL BE COLD!

There was an article in the Kemmerer Gazette this week about Charles Dayton, our own resident Western Artist, which also gave a brief history on how the Minerva Teichert Invitational Art Show came to be.

Many thanks to: Charles Dayton and the Cokeville Arts Council (I don't know all the names!) for their preparation for this event. Char Freeman worked her tail end off today: she spent all morning decorating Pine Creek (others too, please supply me the names!), to arrive to eat lunch with the State Librarians at noon, to attend the presentation at 1pm, to attend training from 7-9pm, to play hostess to several out of town visitors that night!
Jill Dayton for preparing a meal for artists arriving early, some local artists...our own LuAnn Anderson, Dennis Nate, and Ken Cook) and some guests at the Cotton Wood Ranch tonight (this was invitation only, the show didn't officially start yet)

Wyoming State Library Trainings...first two sessions

The ladies (Erin Kinnery, Lesley Boughton) from Cheyenne need to be applauded. They have been working very hard the last three days, traveling from Cheyenne on Tuesday to present to Kemmerer in the morning on Wednesday and Afton in the afternoon of the same day, along with an Afton training. Traveling to Cokeville to present on Thursday and then do two training sessions. Not getting into bed until after 10pm to be ready to train again at 8am, see the Minerva Teichert presentation by Julie Rogers at the LDS church at 10 am on Thursday, to return to train at the Cokeville High School at 11 am and leaving to present and train in Green River at 1pm the same day! If you see these gals, just say thanks!

The trainings went very well. Many people expressed interest in possible next trainings. Please leave your names with Erin Kinney. These first trainings filled up within 72 hours of being opened up. Training sessions had to be made, instead of just open to all, because of the huge interest (that was bigger than anticipated, but that is good!). The fairest way was first come first serve and word of mouth took care of getting word out. It worked faster than the signs that were hung up around town! Everyone didn't hear and everyone didn't get a training slot this time, but it was done if a very fair and efficient way. Thanks for understanding.

The two trainings today went well. They were quite different. Feedback from the first session allowed the second session to go a little smoother.

Huge thank you's to: Principal Keith Harris who allowed this training to happen during this very busy time; Darren Moody for preparing the school, hallways, and signs for us to get to our training room; and especially Brian Toomer who got the computers up and running, kept them up and running, answered our questions, helped us with copies, pens, technical difficulties...and sat through both sessions. Thank you for this great opportunity! It does take a whole village...

Wyoming State LIbrary Project Presentation

The Wyoming State Librarian, Lesley Boughton, and Wyoming Digital Information Specialist, Erin Kinney, arrived in Cokeville today in time to join in for lunch at the Senior Citizen's Center. (Yes, they reserved meals at least a day in advance). They were able to enjoy a delicious lunch prepared by Shirley Toomer and Rose Harmon! Thanks ladies!

Upstairs, the chamber room was filling up quickly by 12:45. more chairs were added along the wall by 1:00 and it was standing room only after that. Karla Toomer welcomed everyone on behalf of the Cokeville Miracle Foundation. Charlotte Freeman welcomed everyone on behalf of the Cokeville Historical Society. It was mentioned that there had never been such great attendance at a Cokeville Historical Society meeting before!

The presentation really explained what the Wyoming State Library was trying to do. They have many old Wyoming newspapers indexed. They are currently search-able by any term. However, when browsing, not everything has a title, a page number, or a volume number. Also, there are some errors, articles listed that should just be included as part of a page, not singled out. They had many interesting stories. It ended at 12:55.

People were thanked for coming. Mrs. Boughton explained that Cokeville was receiving much of the training money and no more is currently available but she encouraged those still interested that hadn't received a training slot to tell Mrs. Kinney of their interest and she would keep a list.

All those that had been fortunate enough to register on-line for one of the training slots before they filled were asked to stay and pick up their training ticket. Anyone who had been told they were on a waiting or substitute list were told they could stay until the end to see if anyone had changed their minds. A few people stuck it out until everyone had picked up their training times and some got in on a training session. Not everyone in attendance was able to but hopefully they will in the future. WSL said they have lots of work to do!

Meet the Candidate Night Quick ReCap

Wednesday evening was the Chamber of Commerce "Meet the Candidate" night. Carol Reed did a great job being an emcee. Candidates for County Commissioners in attendance were: Stan Thompson, Kent Connelly, and one more...I'll think of his name.

Mike Richins was representing Bill Winney for US Representative (I think?)

Joe Wilson running for Cokeville Town Council. Shelly Gaily was in the hospital for emergency treatment but she sent a statement to be read, also for Cokeville Town Council.

Jonathan Teichert is running for area representative (?) for Republican party. (Sorry, not sure on this either)

There were less than 30 (do I dare type 20?) people in attendance. Many of these candidates have been on the road a lot lately, with elections being this coming TUESDAY the 19th. They are trying to get their message out. The attendance was very poor. When we don't know who we should vote for, don't blame the candidates for not trying to get their message out. (The meeting was on the town board and there were several signs around town...)

One of the candidates made a great comment to the effect of: if this were a high school musical, this auditorium would be packed. We support our youth. We have to find a way to support our adults.

Requirements for WSL - Please Read

Due to many different circumstances, there is a need for some clarification regarding the Wyoming State Library presentation and training that will happen this week. Those individuals who were fortunate enough to land one of the 48 training spots opened up on this website last week must carefully read the following:

1. You must be 16 years or older at the time of the August 14th presentation to attend the training
2. Tickets to the training will be handed out at the presentation on August 14th. Tickets will only be given to the 48 training spots which have been filled on a first come-first serve basis or the substitute list. If you don't have a ticket, you won't get the training.
3. You may not give your ticket away to anyone. If you cannot make it, there is a substitute list in place which will be followed.
4. If you are not living in Cokeville, you may attend the presentation but will not be able to attend the training at this time. The Cokeville training is limited and is being presented at this time for the Cokeville area as stated in earlier posts and emails.
5. THERE ARE NO NEW AVAILABLE SPOTS AT THIS TIME FOR THE TRAINING SESSIONS and there will be no chance to get on the substitute list at this point due to high demand and a long list.
6. YOU MUST BRING YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY CARD AND A PICTURE I.D. Failure to do so will immediately forfeit your training spot, if you have one.
7. If you cannot read or type, do not have access to the internet or do not know how to use the internet and you have signed up for a TRAINING SPOT, please let me know ASAP. I will remove your name from the training list and you can spend some time getting the skills necessary to help with this project. You can still attend the presentation.

THERE IS NO "WAITING LIST' AT THIS TIME AS THE FUNDING IS GONE FOR THIS YEAR. Even if you would be great at this job (fast typer, love history, accurate, efficient, love data entry, good worker...) Cokeville is out of training spaces. That's the whole story.

However, if you are interested in doing this job in the near future, it is highly recommend you come to the presentation at the town hall on August 14 from 1-2pm. Then, you will be able to hear about the project, the job, and know what to look for in future funding of this project. The presentation is open to the public. I AM NO LONGER COMPILING A SUBSTITUTE LIST.

DEMAND (WORKERS) IS FAR GREATER THAN CURRENT SUPPLY (DOLLARS).
For whatever reason (at the fair, out of town, no one told you, didn't know, waited to long to get on the website, etc.) you didn't sign up for a training session..it isn't too late to hear about the project. Come on August 14th from 1-2pm at the town hall and at least hear about the project.

Thank you
Karla Toomer

NO MORE TRAINING SIGN-UPS

Thank you for the interest in the Wyoming State Library Position! The training positions are now all full. The Wyoming State Library cannot train any more than are currently registered.

PLEASE COME TO THE PRESENTATION on August 14th even if you do not have training at this time.

NEW FUNDING IS IN JANUARY 2009, and if we have an interest, AND WE ARE WILLING TO WRITE OUR STATE LEGISLATORS asking for increased funding for this project, there may be additional training available after that time.

Thank you for your overwhelming response.

A Personal Note From Karla regarding WSL - PART 4 of 4

this is a continuation, part 4 of 4...

I hope we show the Wyoming State Library crew the best of Cokeville. I hope we welcome them and tell them "thank you" for coming. They appear to love what they do but Cokeville is still a long ways from Cheyenne.

I hope we are attentive to their presentation. I hope we take the time to write thank you cards (actually write them on paper!) to the presenters and to our State Legislatures (Kathy Davison and Stan Cooper) for funding this project with state dollars.

Those of you who don't get in a training right now, please come to the presentation. We welcome you. Hopefully more funding will become available and you can get on board as soon as the money catches up with the demand.

I see a "Cokeville Syndrome" forming and that is, if a decent wage is offered for a skilled position that can be done at home, many skilled workers will re-enter the workforce after an absence of several years. Perhaps the legislature will learn the positive from this "Cokeville Syndrome" and that is that there are lots of willing, skill-ready people who need good paying jobs and would like to work from home.

Our reaction to this great opportunity will very much make an impression on our state legislatures and future funding. Let's be grateful.

A Personal Note From Karla regarding WSL - PART 3 of 4

this is a continuation, part 3 of 4 parts...

The response has been wonderful. Cokeville does want this type of job! Cokeville also has lots of friends and relatives that would benefit from this job! Certainly, the state would benefit from all the willing workers we could provide. However, DEMAND has overcome SUPPLY. I believe the amount of people wanting to work has (temporarily??) obligated all the state's allocated funding to this particular project. Within a few short hours of my posting the training times on-line, they were filling up. As I type, I believe there are only 3 of the original 48 "slots" left. I know there are at least 6 that knew of this job possibility in advance and had an interest that have not signed up. That may be because they are away at fair and are unaware that sign ups are taking place. Maybe they just haven't heard about it yet. Maybe they are out of town. Maybe they heard and just "haven't gotten around to it yet."

Regardless of the reasons, once the slots are full, they are full. I feel for those of you who really wanted to do this but have been left out. You are not forgotten. I think of all of you, those I know about and those I didn't know had an interest. I wish I had a way to make this happen for all of you. Also, many of us have friends, relatives, "a sister", "a grandson", in other parts of Wyoming, and even out of state that this job would be "just perfect for" because someone is out of work or at home convalescing or an at-home mom that needs a little extra income.... There just isn't enough funding to go there, although I believe the state definitely has enough work if there was funding.

I would tell those of you who have relatives in the state of Wyoming that would like to have this opportunity, have them find out who there county historical society president is (look on-line...google "Wyoming State Historical Society") and ask if they are inviting the Wyoming State Library to come speak at a chapter meeting.

Now, if you are still reading this extremely long post...
If you are planning on being "dishonest" in any way with this job...please do not tell me. I do not want my opinion of any of you lowered. By this I mean, if you are planning on "working someone else's hours", I don't want to know. I had this romantic vision if working on-line, reading old newspapers, getting to know more Wyoming history by helping archive and index for the Wyoming State Library. A dream job for me! If you are thinking "data-entry" and you already are dreading the job, don't tell me. I don't want to know.

A word to the moms, because that is really who I did all this work for...Whether you are full-time at-home or already work outside the home...I did this for you. I love you. I want you to be able to make your home a little better, if that is what a little extra money will do for you. I don't want this to be an added stress that has entered your home. Please don't think you have to do the full 20 hours each week. It will already be a sacrifice to take some time away from being a mom to work from home. I know that. All moms know that time is precious. This job is an opportunity because we can do it from our homes and we can get off the computer when a little one needs us or it's time for night prayers and a bedtime story. This job cannot become a nightmare by adding stress. This job cannot add guilt. Don't let it. Just look at it as an opportunity, a blessing, and do what you can when you can. I will feel terrible if you are sacrificing time with your family that you need for a few dollars. I know I have no control over what happens in your home, but you do and even good things can get turned around to invade the family time.

A Personal Note From Karla regarding WSL - PART 2 of 4

this post is part 2 of 4...

The answer I received was "yes", this opportunity is for many that meet certain requirements and have skills necessary for this type of job. Of course with Wyoming dollars, preference is for Wyoming residents.

Being an officer of the Cokeville Historical Society and knowing that the Wyoming State Library would come to Cokeville at the request of the Cokeville Historical Society, I approached the president, Charlotte Freeman, about the idea and she was excited to host the event. I have recently been elected to be the new chairman of the Cokeville Miracle Foundation and one of our mission statements is to help improve the lives of citizen's of Cokeville. This job certainly fit that! Together, Charlotte and I, after talking to our respective boards, decided the Cokeville Historical Society and the Cokeville Miracle Foundation could co-sponsor this event and highlight our wonderful little community by showing our visitors a good time! We would take them to the Minerva Teichert Invitational Art Show and really let them know how glad we are they came to our town.

The Wyoming State Librarian has been just great to work with. She has answered all our questions and been very gracious in following the time schedule we've outlined for her. I can't wait to meet her in person. (I consciously do not post her name, she doesn't need all of us calling her!)

A Personal Note From Karla regarding WSL - PART 1 of 4

I would like to share a few very personal thoughts that I have spent considerable time the past few days on. I want to share them to give some insight into the exciting development that is coming into Cokeville's economy, perhaps the biggest economic development event (although unintended) in the past 50 years.

When I first noticed in one of the many newsletters I subscribe to a little posting about helping the Wyoming State Library with an archive/index project I was so excited! I love history and I loved the idea of getting to read old Wyoming newspapers. However, I was spending a few weeks away from Cokeville with my family and didn't respond to the posting immediately. It was always in the back of my mind I kept wondering, is it really as good as it sounds?

When I got around to making the call to get more information, it all turned out to be exactly as stated in my newsletter! My mind kept saying, "If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is." That thought has kept me out of a lot of trouble in my life, I stay away from anything that fits that saying. However, this opportunity wasn't a scam. It was amazing to me that there was actually pay involved and I could work from home, from my computers, on my own schedule.

Being a full time mom with four very active children, including one 3 year old at home all day, this sounded like the perfect way to make a little something extra to do something a little special for Christmas for my family. I kept thinking there would be a "catch" or this part-time job wouldn't really come true. However, the more I looked into it, the more amazed I was with the opportunity this was going to be! I have a college degree but have put work on hold while I raise my children, opting instead to spend what time I can allocate out of the home to doing volunteer work and service for Cokeville. I have felt like my children seeing me serve would be a blessing to them in their lives.

I also have a dear friend, also an at home mom, who would love to do something special for Christmas, but more importantly needed to make a mortgage payment. I decided to call her and ask if she wanted "in " with me. She was very grateful that I had thought of her and together we pursued the possibility that very soon, we might both be employed from our own homes.

In my heart I knew that there are others in Cokeville who need more than just "a little something special for Christmas". I realized that this could probably save some families from some very unfortunate circumstances. Cokeville is a town of families. Many husbands have to commute for their jobs. Some wives do. Some women make the sacrifice to work outside of the home to help with family needs. Many educated women make the sacrifice to stay in the home with their children. Although there are more circumstances than the ones I described, it was the women - the mothers - who kept entering my mind. What a blessing a job like this could be to those who really needed a way to help out with family expenses. With those moms in mind, I asked about the possibility of this job being available for more than just two or three people.

Plan to attend AUGUST 14 Presentation PRIOR TO TRAINING

The Cokeville Historical Society and the Cokeville Miracle Foundation are pleased to be able to coordinate bringing the Wyoming State Librarian to Cokeville to present a special project they are working on. There is also available some part-work available for the THOSE WHO SEE THE PRESENTATION and are interested in helping and have the necessary skills. (This training is not a total job training...please be proficient at typing, reading, comprehension, internet use and computer skills). As far as I know, there is no typing test with this job, but it is an at-will contract which most likely will have an expectation of hourly output.

We, your local society and foundation members, are making the COKEVILLE TRAINING available for THOSE WHO HAVE SEEN THE PRESENTATION AND are interested in it. You may pre-register for the training if you are fairly certain you have the necessary skills and documents and you want to help and you can attend the 1-2pm presentation on August 14. We'd like to have as many people train as possible over this two day period.

The Cokeville Historical Society and Cokeville Miracle Foundation have provided on-line sign-up for pre-registration for the trainings on a first come-first serve basis. There will be very limited space for any who have not pre-registered on-line and want to train after the presentation. Not training AT THIS TIME DOES NOT automatically preclude you from future part-time work on this project...it depends on the state funding etc. so please COME TO THE PRESENTATION even if you haven't pre-registered. You may not get trained right now but other trainings may become available.

This is a SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY. To make the most of it, we are asking that people who are interested in attending the training sessions to FIRST SEE THE PRESENTATION that will be on AUGUST 14 from 1-2pm at the town hall. I know this doesn't fit everyone's schedule but that's just how it is. It is a special opportunity we are bringing in and we welcome all those that can arrange their schedules so they can MAKE THE PRESENTATION.

We ask you to first attending the PRESENTATION on AUGUST 14 from 1-2pm at the town hall so that everyone fully understands the nature of this huge project and the training that will go along with it.

Also, it will leave training time open for training, not questions and explaining again what the project will entail. COKEVILLE CLASS TIME IS LIMITED and so is Cokeville class space.

IMPORTANT: Training place will be announced at the presentation. TRAINING IS IN COKEVILLE BUT WILL NOT BE HELD AT THE TOWN HALL

A few more anwers to questions about WSL project and job...

Here are a few more answers to commonly asked questions about the WSL pt/ job that is being blogged about on this site. You can click here to read a post called "General Information" about the WSL project and job.

You can click here to read the post called "The Details" about the WSL (Wyoming State Library) project and job.

YOU MUST HAVE TYPING, READING, COMPUTER SKILLS. MUST BE ABLE TO PRODUCE SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER, WYOMING IDENTIFICATION ETC.

They have had a wonderful response...it sounds like they might be topped out on 20hr/wk workers after the Cokeville training is complete...the Cokeville Historical Society and Cokeville Miracle Foundation are hosting the Wyoming State Library as a benefit to the Cokeville area. Other interested persons, or those interested after these dates, may need to wait for other presentations or future funding.

The other question was about annual limits on time or income. In order to keep as many 20hr/wk jobs open as possible, funding will be allocated as if contract workers (that is you...the person working) will work the full 20. Once the state's money is gone, or allocated, it will be up to the state legislature to fund more next time around, or not.

WSL Training Sign Up Times Removed

I have removed the four scheduled training sign up times because all 12 slots in all four sessions were filled up by the morning of Thursday, August 8, 2008.

I posted four training sign up times on Monday late afternoon. The first session was filled within about a 12 hour period. The next three filled almost as quick, with three slots left on Thursday morning and closing within an hour of each other.

Please come to the informative PRESENTATION on August 14 from 1-2pm at the Cokeville Town Hall. You can get an idea of the program if there is more funding allocated after January 2008. Thanks for your interest.

Minerva Teichert Invitational Art Show and Sale

The 4th annual Minerva Teichert Invitational Art Show and Sale is happening August 15-16, 2008. Plan on attending this unique event! You have an opportunity to view original pieces of art at Pine Creek Ski Resort in a very relaxed atmosphere. The artists are there on hand to visit with those viewing the pieces. Most are for sale, however, you do not need to be shopping for art to enjoy the art show. It is such a relaxed atmosphere, very nice.

There is a wonderful dinner for EVERYONE (not just artists or their guests but the ENTIRE COKEVILLE COMMUNITY as well as those traveling to Cokeville to enjoy the art show). This dinner is held Friday Evening and is kept to an affordable price. Justin Pope will be the chef and he is very, very good. The food, the chef, the atmosphere, the art, the artists could all command a higher price for the dinner, but that is not the goal of the Cokeville Arts Council. They want to provide a classy experience that people from Cokeville can afford to attend.

Please watch for fliers and more information and bring the family!

Vote for Shelly Gailey

Shelly Gailey - Definitely in the Race

Recently I had a conversation with Shelly Gailey. She has heard some comments that people think she is not running for Cokeville Town Council. She would like everyone to know that is definitely not the case. SHELLY IS IN AND RUNNING! Shelly has opened a website so people can see that even if they can't put her name and face together yet, she has definitely been involved in the taking care of Cokeville in the time she's been here. Check out her website by clicking here.

Also in the running for town council is JOE WILSON. He is excited to serve the town and has some great suggestions that's he is willing to help implement.

Incumbent is Wayne Harmon, also running to retain his seat from his first term.

Cokeville's own Stan Thompson, the current Mayor, is running for Lincoln County Commissioner. He has been involved in the county level planning and zoning for many years. Stan would add a lot of knowledge to the County Commission. I also think he would be more of a team player than Kent Connelley, who is the incumbent hoping to retain his seat from his first term. When you only have three members of a team, you need all three working together, even when they disagree. I don't hear of that happening right now.

Lincoln County Fair

The Lincoln County Fair in Afton takes place this week.
Yes, registration for putting items in the community fair booth is frustrating.
Yes, registration must be done in advance.
Yes, the preferred method of registration is on-line.
Yes, if you don't print out your fair tags before the computer system shuts down, there is no getting the fair tags printed.
Yes, this year Youth arts and crafts were listed with Adult arts and crafts and it was very confusing
Yes, the dates on the front of the fair book were listed incorrectly
Yes, there were mistakes on the on-line programs

NO, there is no late registration for items for community booths
NO, there is no correcting mislabeled items for community booths

RUMOR is there are no carnival rides at the fair this year...I'll keep you posted

EVEN WITH ALL OF THIS, we all need to thank Gwen Petersen from the depths of our hearts for being the community booth chairwoman. She and all her helpers, the booth decorators, the item runners, and those that made it through all the hoops safely and got items registered for the fair, deserve a standing ovation. Thank you, thank you. It isn't easy. It is thankless.
There is another option. Let the community fair booth die. It's happened in other communities. However, I am SO GLAD Cokeville doesn't feel that is an option. To let the community fair booth die would be devastating. Eventually someone would resurrect it and say, "Why wasn't this being done? Why don't we have a community booth?" Then, they would have to relearn everything, reinvent the wheel so to speak. SO, thank you for plugging along, keeping the fair booth open and going. Even though there might not be a huge variety in people contributing or items placed in the fair booth, those that take advantage of it thank those of you that make it all possible.

Watering on the Highway

I wish the water on the south end of town on the highway would be turned on by the Town of Cokeville.

My understanding of the agreement when the trees were planted was that they would be watered by the town, regardless of what the town feels land owners should or should not be doing with their property near the trees. It's a shame to let the landscaping die because of piddly reasons and excuses that will change depending on who you ask.

Just turn the water and water the landscape. As my three year old would say, "sheesh...it's not that difficult"

Wyoming State Library Project - General Information

The Wyoming State Librarian will be here on August 14. (I DO NOT KNOW THE TIMES YET)
There will be a one hour presentation on a large project they are working on. It will be very interesting and all are welcome to attend. This will probably take place at the town hall in the Council Room. They are looking for help with the project so after you view the presentation, if you are interested in a part-time job...keep reading. You can come to the presentation just to learn about this huge project, even if you don't want the part-time job.

Those interested in working from their home computers helping with making the project more "searchable" to on-line users by indexing and archiving information (according to my understanding), are invited to attend any ONE of several three hour training classes to be held in Cokeville and Kemmerer on the 14th and 15th.

That is what I understand from my emails and phone calls with Leslie Boughton, the Wyoming State Librarian.

As soon as I know the times for the presentation and the trainings, I will post them on this site and around town.

Thanks
