Third Police Officer? No More...

Last night the Cokeville Town Council apparently decided to not retain their recent hire as the town's third police officer.

At the end of last night's town council meeting, the council went into executive session. When they came out, no mention was made of what happened in the executive session. The officer and his family were informed after council meeting that he would no longer be employed by the town, effective immediately.

I felt it would be helpful to clarify some details relevant to this difficult situation. I am not speaking in behalf of the council. These comments are limited to this specific situation rather than the general transparency issue.

When discussing personnel issues, council's specifically do not publicly discuss the why's or whats of employee performance. This is for the protection of both the employee and the community. On Tuesday, once the decision was made, Officer Miller was directed to go directly to the affected family and communicate the decision. This was out of respect for the family as we felt they should be the first to receive notification. The specific decision will then be included in the public record.

In speaking with an administrator of a larger Wyoming community, he emphasized that the decision would need to be recorded in the public record and notes from the executive session were not to be made public. The only questionable transparency issue would be whether the specific decision was to be announced publicly before the affected individual was notified.
